Leo, the Young Spark of the Tavern of Realms

Updated: Aug 20

The following post contains lore from the books shown below. Proceed carefully, traveler.
At the bustling heart of the Tavern of Realms, where cosmic currents swirl and travelers from countless worlds cross paths, a young boy named Leo shines with the promise of a star beginning to ignite. Nearly eleven years old, with dark hair marked by a streak of silver, Leo is no ordinary child. He is an inventor, a dreamer, and a hero in the making, whose courage and curiosity illuminate the cosmic-energy-filled halls of this interdimensional sanctuary.

Leo's journey began on Earth, beneath the welcoming warmth of Green Bean Haven, where he drew foxes on napkins after school while his mother, Alice, served coffee. In the first book, The Key at Closing Time, a mysterious Key sends them hurtling into the multiverse. Leo is immediately captivated by this impossible new place, whether by plates of spaghetti prepared by Ivor, the Tavern's orc chef, the patrons arriving from different realms and species, or his growing partnership with Quill, the Tavern's resident inventor and custodian. Everything is new to him in a world shaped by ancient magic that, somehow, seems to recognize something within him.
By The Collector's Hunt, Leo is chasing saboteurs through the frozen storms of Glacidia, frost scattering across his cloak as he holds tight to one of his spider-bots, its runic eyes glowing with an almost lifelike awareness.
"I can do this," he whispers, his voice unsteady but determined, like a boy trying to prove that he is more than just a kid.
His inventions are his own kind of magic. Leo's spider-bots, built from metal, gears, runes, and technology gathered across the realms, scuttle through the Tavern, chirping complaints at one another or spinning glowing threads as they assist with repairs. In The Collector's Hunt, his Rift-Pointer tracks dimensional disturbances and forced-rift activity threatening the realms. His workbench, crowded with scrolls, spare components, half-finished devices, and the occasional burst of sparks, stands as evidence of a curiosity that never seems to rest, a quality encouraged by Quill's mentorship and watched with growing interest by Eterna.
While adjusting a spider-bot's sensors in a fractured realm, the silver streak in Leo's dark hair catches the starlight, a lasting mark of Selina's sacrifice and of the connection that now binds him to the Tavern's Heart and its ancient protections.

Yet Leo's greatest strength is his heart.
Despite everything he witnessed during the Riftmaker War, he has held on to hope, and his empathy allows him to connect with refugees, warriors, and people caught in conflicts far larger than themselves. Back at the Tavern of Realms, he can still grin when Ivor sets a plate of spaghetti in front of him and enjoy the faintly sparkling sauce as though cosmic disasters can wait until after dinner. It is a small, very Leo kind of joy amid the chaos. Ivor's affection for him, hidden beneath the orc's gruff manner, has been part of that sense of home from the beginning.
And through all of it, his bond with Alice remains unbreakable. It is precisely that push and pull between a mother desperate to protect her son and a boy increasingly determined to prove what he can do that makes their relationship so central to the story.
Leo's vulnerabilities are what keep him real. Fear still catches at him beneath the shadow of the Devourer, but he moves forward anyway, sometimes clutching a spider-bot as much for reassurance as for whatever technical purpose he originally built it to serve.
His motto, "Curiosity unlocks the stars," drives him to investigate the secrets of the multiverse, from the resonance of the Frost Shard to the threat posed by the Clarion Device.
While Alice struggles with prophecies, impossible choices, and the growing threat surrounding the realms, Leo's stubborn spark of hope becomes one of her anchors, a reminder that the Tavern's future may belong not only to ancient guardians and cosmic powers, but to the young people growing up within its walls.
Through the halls of the Tavern of Realms, Leo is a whirlwind of invention, curiosity, and emotion, a boy who still draws foxes but has begun dreaming about how to save entire realms.
His story is one of growing up in a universe that keeps asking him to grow faster than he should, of a child slowly forging his own place in a multiverse standing at the edge of catastrophe, while his spider-bots chirp defiantly at his heels as he walks toward whatever comes next.
Till the next rift,
